Art Care & Installation

A few careful choices when unpacking, installing and displaying your painting help protect its surface and keep it looking its best.

Unpack with care

  • Clear a clean, dry area before opening the package.
  • Keep blades and scissors away from the canvas surface.
  • Lift by the frame or support, with clean, dry hands; avoid pressing on the painted surface.
  • Use two people for large pieces and keep the front away from sharp objects.
  • Check the artwork and packaging before discarding any materials.

Plan the installation

Choose fixings appropriate to the artwork’s weight, wall material and any supplied hanging system. Do not assume one type of hook or anchor is suitable for every wall.

For large or heavy pieces, use a professional installer. Check for concealed wiring or pipes before drilling, and follow the fixing manufacturer’s instructions. Keep artwork securely mounted and out of reach where it could be pulled or knocked down.

Rolled canvas should be stretched and framed by a professional before display. Avoid improvised stretching or stapling through the painted area.

Choose the right location

Display indoors in a stable, dry environment. Avoid direct sunlight, radiators, fireplaces, air-conditioning outlets, damp walls and repeated swings in temperature or humidity.

A room category is a styling suggestion, not a claim that every painting is suitable for that environment. For kitchens and bathrooms, keep artwork away from steam, splashes, grease and persistent humidity. Ask us about the specific piece before placing it in a challenging location.

Clean gently

Do not use water, household cleaners, solvents, sprays or abrasive cloths on the painted surface. Do not apply varnish or attempt repairs yourself.

For light surface dust, ask us about the appropriate method for your particular painting, especially with raised, fragile or mixed-material textures. If the work needs more than light dust removal, seek advice from a professional art conservator.

Moving or storing artwork

Protect the frame and corners, keep pressure off the painted surface and avoid direct contact between textured paint and packing films. Store in a clean, dry, stable environment. Keep heavy objects off the painting and do not stack works face-to-face.
